Lazhar Akremi born March 6, 1959 in Gafsa, is a Tunisian journalist, lawyer and politician.

He was Minister Delegate to the Minister of the Interior in charge of Reforms, from July 1 to December 24, 2011, within the government of Béji Caïd Essebsi. In 2015, he was Minister to the Head of Government in charge of Relations with the Assembly of People’s Representatives. From 2019 to 2020, he is minister-adviser to the head of government Youssef Chahed.

The first case:

November 13, 2022: Lawyer and politician Mohamed Lazhar Al-Akrami confirmed in a post he posted on his personal Facebook account that the Tunis Branch of Lawyers informed him that he had been referred to investigation on the occasion of a political statement on Radio Facts Online, due to a complaint filed by Minister of Justice Leila Jaffal against him on the background of a media statement that exposed In it, the Ministry of Justice inspected and described some of the judges as “corrupt” and they were not exempted, according to him (Al-Sabah).

On the same day of his arrest, Al-Akrami wrote on Facebook: “Neither Qais Saeed nor his regime, nor the basic or chaotic building, could answer people’s questions about high prices, employment and the loss of basic materials, and in this case sacrifices were necessary.”

February 27, 2023: The investigative judge of the anti-terrorism judicial pole issued a prison deposit card against Al-Akrami.

Lazhar Al-Akrami had previously refused to appear before the investigating judge, on April 28, 2023, “due to the failure to provide a transport vehicle that respects the minimum humanitarian standards for transportation from the prison to the pole,” according to a communication by the defense authority.
Al-Akrami’s defense team went on to say that in the event of an attempt to use what it called a “torture vehicle” to transfer Al-Akrami from prison to the headquarters of the counter-terrorism pole, he will refuse to board it and therefore the hearing will not take place, according to what was stated in the text of the communication (Ultra Tunisia; Samir Dilo’s tweet).

Lazhar Akremi Studies
Lazhar Akremi studied at the mixed high school in Gafsa then at the faculty of letters in La Manouba, in 1980 and 1981, and at the University of Damascus (Syria), where he obtained a master’s degree in law.

Professional career
In 1984, he became a journalist. Between 1992 and 1994, he was a press attaché at the Ministry of Justice. From 1994, he practiced as a lawyer.

Political career
Following the 2011 revolution, Lazhar Akremi was appointed Minister Delegate to the Minister of the Interior, in charge of Reforms, in the government of Béji Caïd Essebsi. His referent Minister of the Interior is Habib Essid.

In 2012, he joined Béji Caïd Essebsi to found Nidaa Tounes4, of which he became the spokesperson. He was elected to the Assembly of People’s Representatives in the elections of October 26, 2014 in the constituency of Ben Arous. On January 23, 2015, he was appointed Minister to the Head of Government in charge of Relations with the Assembly in the government of Habib Essid5. On October 5, he announced his resignation, accepted the next day by the head of government.

In June 2019, he was appointed minister-adviser to the head of government Youssef Chahed; he resigned from this post on February 24, 2020, on the eve of the vote of confidence in the government of Elyes Fakhfakh.

On February 13, 2023, a leading opponent of President Kaïs Saïed, he was arrested for plotting against the state and taken to the Bouchoucha barracks. On July 13, he was released.
